#5 Do we know gentrification when we hear it?

Wednesday 4th August
19.00-21.00 @  meeting point RET building (entrance via Waalhaven Noordzijde 1)

During our previous session with Nienke and Rob (Fucking Good Art), we delved into post 1960’s housing policy and its relationship to private ownership, cooperative living as well as commoning practices in public space.

This week we ask:  “do we know gentrification when we hear it?“. We revisit Oud Charlois, where we held our first school in which we tried to define gentrification based on its actors, factors, actions and signifiers. Based on protocols for organized listening by Ultra Red, we will take our mapping to the streets and focus on sound as an entry point to discussing our perceptions and biases around what gentrification sounds like.

Make sure you bring your phones fully charged or your audio recorders! Food will be available before the session, bring along snacks or drinks if you are able to contribute. We’ll also stay for a drink afterwards…

Anti-Gentrification School is a school in process, with a grassroots curriculum built for and by cultural workers, neighbours, students and residents to collectively learn, unlearn and develop clear tactics and strategies to resist gentrification within our communities. We all have something to share and something to learn. Bring your concerns, questions, stories and experiences so we can start mapping our complicity and entanglement in the process of gentrification.

Accessibility info: The building is accessible to wheelchairs. The event will be primarily in English, if this is a problem please let us know. To RSVP or if you have any questions please email us: cultural.workers.unite@gmail.com

P.S. Two references, the first is an article on how Charlois housing prices tripled within a few year and the second is Five protocols for organized listening by Ultra-Red on which we will base our session.
